A. van Wees

A. Van Wees is the trading name of a Dutch company called Amsterdamse Handelmaatschappij Excella BV. It was founded in 1971 by Cees Van Wees, however the A. Van Wees business is much older, originating in 1872. The business was originally a wholesale importer and distributor, with the modern company established with a new focus on craft distilling spirits such as genevers, bitters and liqueurs.

The company operates the Distilleerderij de Ooievaar in Amsterdam, as well as its shop across the street. While the company does not regularly bottle rum, it buys casks from E&A Scheer which it has released over the years, including some historic examples from the Cigüeña Carta brand. The company made a notable splash in the rum world in 2025 when it bottled a dame jeanne of 1959 vintage Hampden rum that had been stored in Cees Van Wees' cellars in Amsterdam since 1988. His daughter, Fenny, bottled the rum with the assistance of Luc Gargano of Velier.
